Heavy-weight drill pipe (HWDP) is a mid-weight tubular that sits between standard drill pipe and drill collars in the string. It has the same tool joints and handling profile as drill pipe but a thicker wall and an upset center section, giving it more weight per foot than drill pipe without the rigidity of a collar. Choosing between spiral and plain-body HWDP — and knowing how much to run — is a routine but important BHA decision.
What HWDP actually does
HWDP earns its place in the string for three reasons:
- Transition member. It smooths the abrupt stiffness change between rigid drill collars and limber drill pipe, reducing fatigue at that critical connection point.
- Weight on bit in deviated wells. In directional and horizontal work, running collars in the build or lateral is impractical. HWDP laid in the string above the BHA delivers weight on bit while staying flexible enough to negotiate the curve.
- Fatigue resistance. Because tool joints and the upset center are the load-bearing points, HWDP tolerates the bending and cyclic loading that would quickly fatigue standard drill pipe.

Plain-body HWDP
Plain-body HWDP has a smooth cylindrical center upset. It is the original design and remains the workhorse for most vertical and lightly deviated wells.
Strengths
- Lower cost to rent or buy.
- Maximum wall contact means slightly more weight per foot than a spiral joint of the same OD.
- Simple to inspect and easy to clean on the pipe rack.
Trade-off
- The full-gauge center body has more surface area pressed against the borehole wall, which raises the risk of differential sticking in permeable, overbalanced intervals.
Spiral HWDP
Spiral HWDP machines helical grooves into the center upset. Those grooves reduce the contact area between the pipe body and the wall while still centering the joint in the hole.
Strengths
- Reduced differential sticking. Less wall contact means less area for a pressure differential to pin the pipe against a mud cake.
- Better fluid bypass and cuttings movement around the joint.
- Preferred in high-angle, extended-reach, and known sticking-prone formations.
Trade-off
- Slightly higher cost and marginally less weight per foot than a plain joint of equal OD, because the grooves remove material.

The decision is a risk-versus-cost judgment. If your offset data shows differential sticking or you are drilling a meaningful lateral, spiral pays for itself the first time it keeps the string free. On a straightforward vertical well in competent rock, plain-body does the job for less.
How much HWDP to run
A common starting rule in directional work is to carry enough HWDP to supply the required weight on bit plus a safety factor, keeping the neutral point within the HWDP rather than in the drill pipe above it. In vertical wells where collars supply most of the weight, three to nine joints of HWDP as a transition member is typical. Always confirm with a torque-and-drag and buckling model for the specific well — hole angle, mud weight, and BHA stiffness all move the answer.
Connections and inspection
HWDP uses the same rotary-shouldered connections as drill pipe (NC46, NC50, and similar), so it stows on the same racks and runs through the same handling tools. Because HWDP lives in a high-fatigue zone, insist on current inspection records to DS-1 or equivalent — center-wear pads, tool-joint dimensions, and hardbanding condition all matter. Rent or buy
HWDP requirements shift well to well: a spiral string for this quarter’s laterals, a few plain-body transition joints for next month’s vertical program. That variability is exactly why many operators rent their heavy-weight drill pipe rather than warehouse every size and body type.
