Rental strings for completion and stimulation

Completion is the phase that turns a drilled hole into a producing well: running production tubing, setting packers, perforating, and stimulating the reservoir. Stimulation — most commonly hydraulic fracturing — pumps fluid and proppant at high rate and high pressure, which puts the workstring and surface tools under loads a drilling string never sees. The tools a completion program needs

  • Workstring tubing carries fluid to and from the reservoir and takes the internal pressure of stimulation. We stock high-strength grades such as P-110 for frac and stimulation duty.
  • Handling tools — elevators, slips, tongs and stabbing guides — let the crew run and pull tubing safely and make up premium connections to the correct torque.
  • Pressure control equipment rated for completion pressures provides the barriers required while the well is live during and after stimulation.
  • Downhole tools and BHA components round out the string with crossovers, subs and the fittings a completion assembly requires.

Why connections and pressure ratings matter

A completion string is often gas-bearing and always pressure-cycled, so the connection is the critical detail. Premium gas-tight connections seal on metal-to-metal shoulders rather than relying on thread compound, which is why we supply them for completion and stimulation work rather than standard tool joints. Grade selection follows the same logic: P-110 and comparable high-strength tubing give the wall strength and yield needed to hold frac pressure with margin. Sizing a stimulation workstring

A frac or stimulation workstring is sized around three limits: burst (internal pressure), tension (hanging weight plus any overpull), and the connection’s pressure and torque rating. High-strength grades such as P-110 give the wall and yield to hold treating pressure with margin, but the string is only as strong as its weakest connection, which is why premium gas-tight connections rather than standard tool joints are the norm. When treating pressures approach the string’s rating, a heavier wall or higher grade — rather than accepting a thin safety factor — is the right call. Barriers on a live completion

Perforating, setting packers and stimulating are performed with the well live or about to be, so the two-barrier philosophy governs the work: at all times two tested, independent barriers stand between formation pressure and the environment. The workstring, its connections, and the surface pressure-control equipment all participate in that barrier envelope, which is why each is pressure-tested and certified. Common pitfalls

  • Under-rating the string to save on rental — treating pressure spikes exceed a thin margin and part the string.
  • Mixing connection types so a premium gas-tight seal is compromised by a standard crossover.
  • Skipping the pressure test — an unverified rating is an assumption, not a barrier.
  • Wrong grade for sour service — an H2S zone can require controlled-yield, NACE-compliant tubing even where a higher plain grade would otherwise be chosen.

What connections do you offer for completion and stimulation workstrings?
For completions we supply premium gas-tight connections rather than standard API tool joints, because stimulation and pressure testing subject the string to high internal pressure and gas.
