Drill pipe grade is the API designation for the steel’s minimum yield strength, and it sets how much tension, torque, and pressure a joint can carry. The standard grades — E-75, X-95, G-105, and S-135 — run from mild to high-strength, with the number denoting minimum yield in thousands of psi (S-135 = 135,000 psi minimum yield). Knowing when a deeper, higher-angle, or higher-torque well justifies stepping up to S-135 is a core string-design decision. For the full breakdown, see our drill pipe grades explained guide.
The four common grades

Higher grade means more strength for the same pipe dimensions — but it is not automatically “better.” Grade selection is a balance of load capacity, cost, and service conditions.
What a higher grade buys you
Yield strength drives three limits that matter in the string:
- Tensile capacity — the hook load the pipe can support without yielding. Deeper strings weigh more; at some depth E-75 runs out of margin.
- Torsional capacity — the torque the pipe and its connection can transmit. Long laterals and high friction demand more torque.
- Pressure/collapse resistance — relevant in HPHT and specific operations.
Stepping from E-75 (75 ksi) to S-135 (135 ksi) is an 80% increase in yield, which translates into substantially more tensile and torsional margin for the same OD and weight.
Signals it is time to step up to S-135
Reach for S-135 when any of these apply:
1. Depth and hook load
As measured depth grows, string weight climbs toward the tensile rating of lower grades. When your torque-and-drag model shows hook load — including overpull margin for stuck-pipe contingency — approaching the limit of G-105, step up. Deep wells are the classic S-135 case.
2. Extended-reach and long laterals
High-angle, long-lateral wells generate large torque and drag from wall contact. The torsional limit, not just tension, often governs here. S-135’s higher torque capacity — paired with high-torque connections — keeps you inside the connection make-up envelope on long reaches.
3. High doglegs and fatigue
Doglegs bend the pipe cyclically, and fatigue accumulates fastest where bending stress is high. Higher-grade pipe carries more margin against the combined tension-plus-bending stress in aggressive dogleg severity, though fatigue management always also depends on inspection and rotation practice.
4. HPHT conditions
High pressure and temperature raise both mechanical and collapse demands. S-135 is standard in many HPHT programs for the extra margin.
5. Weight-on-bit and buckling margin
In demanding directional work, the higher yield helps manage combined loading and buckling tendencies through the build section.
When you should not over-grade
S-135 costs more and is not the answer to every well:
- Shallow vertical wells are well served by E-75 or X-95; S-135 is wasted capacity.
- Sour service (H2S). Higher-strength steels can be more susceptible to sulfide stress cracking. In sour environments, material selection must meet NACE MR0175 / ISO 15156 — grade alone does not make pipe sour-service suitable, and sometimes a controlled-yield or specially qualified grade is required instead of simply the highest strength.
- Cost discipline. If G-105 carries the load with margin, paying for S-135 buys nothing.
A common workhorse configuration is 5-inch S-135 for deep and long-lateral programs, with lighter grades reserved for shallow sections.
Confirm it with a string design
The right grade falls out of a torque-and-drag and buckling model for the actual well — depth, angle profile, mud weight, dogleg severity, and service. The model tells you where each grade’s margin runs out. Choosing by rule of thumb instead of by model either leaves you short of margin or paying for strength you never use.
Rent or buy
Because grade requirements change with each well — S-135 for this deep lateral, E-75 for next month’s shallow vertical — many operators rent their drill pipe and match the grade to the job. Where a grade runs continuously at high utilization, buying inspected joints can be the cheaper long-run call. We supply both, fully inspected to DS-1.
