Landing String — A landing string is a high-strength drill pipe or workstring used to run and land heavy casing or liner strings to depth, chosen for the extreme tensile and slip-crushing loads of supporting a long, heavy string in deep wells.

What a landing string is
A landing string is the pipe string used to lower and set very heavy casing or liner into a deep well. Because a long casing string can weigh far more than a normal drilling load, the landing string must carry exceptional tension while it is suspended in the slips and spider. Purpose-built landing strings use high-grade, heavy-wall drill pipe with connections and slip areas rated for these loads.
The critical concern is not only tensile capacity but slip crushing — the radial load imposed on the pipe body by the slips when a huge hanging weight is transferred to them.
Design considerations
- Tensile rating — must exceed the buoyed weight of the casing string plus overpull margin.
- Slip crushing — slip contact length and grade are selected to avoid crushing the pipe.
- Handling — matched to landing-string spiders, elevators and heavy-duty slips.
