Stuck Pipe — Stuck pipe is a condition in which the drill string can no longer be moved, rotated, or pulled free from the wellbore, caused by mechanisms such as differential sticking, pack-off, key seating, or wellbore instability.

What stuck pipe is
Stuck pipe occurs when the drill string cannot be moved as normal — it will not pull, rotate, or run down freely. It is one of the costliest non-productive events in drilling, and how it is remedied depends entirely on the mechanism that caused it. Recognizing the type of sticking early, from the pattern of pull, torque, and circulation, is key to freeing the string before it becomes permanent.
Common mechanisms
The main causes are differential sticking, where the pipe is pinned against a permeable formation by overbalanced mud pressure; mechanical sticking from cuttings pack-off, borehole collapse, or undergauge hole; and key seating, where a tool joint hangs up in a groove worn into a dogleg. First responses include working the string, jarring with a drilling jar, and spotting freeing fluids. If the string cannot be freed, the operator locates the free point, performs a back-off, and moves to fishing.

Sticking is unplanned, and both prevention (jars in the BHA) and cure (fishing tools) rely on specialized equipment.
