Tubing — Tubing is the smaller-diameter pipe run inside casing to convey produced fluids to surface or to carry fluids for completion and workover operations, manufactured to API Spec 5CT with threaded and coupled connections.

What tubing is
Tubing is production or work pipe run inside the casing string. Made to API Spec 5CT, it carries produced oil and gas to surface during production, or serves as a workstring during completion and workover. Common sizes range from 2-3/8 in to 4-1/2 in outside diameter, joined by threaded and coupled (T&C) connections or premium threads.
Because tubing is smaller and more easily retrieved than casing, it can be pulled and replaced over a well’s life without disturbing the cemented casing. In workover service, tubing conveys tools, fluids and pressure to the zone of interest.
Key attributes
- Grades — API 5CT grades (J-55, L-80, N-80, P-110) selected for pressure and environment; sour service invokes NACE MR0175 limits.
- Connections — API T&C for standard duty, premium gas-tight connections for high pressure.
- Range length — supplied in API Range 1, 2 or 3 lengths, with pup joints for space-out.
