A drill string connection is the threaded, shouldered joint that links tubulars and transmits tension, torque and pressure between them. Broadly, connections fall into two families: standardized API rotary-shouldered connections and proprietary premium connections. Choosing between them is a trade-off between interchangeability and cost on one side and torque capacity, sealing and fatigue life on the other.
How rotary-shouldered connections work
A rotary-shouldered connection makes up on a torque shoulder, not on the threads. The pin shoulders against the box face, and correct make-up torque preloads that shoulder so it stays sealed and does not open under operating torque and bending. The threads locate and hold the joint; the shoulder carries the seal and takes the make-up preload.
- Single-shoulder (API) connections use one external shoulder.
- Double-shoulder connections add a second internal (nose) shoulder that shares torque and raises the make-up capacity for the same OD and ID.
API connections
API connections are defined by API specifications and identified by families such as NC (Numbered Connection, for example NC38, NC50), Regular (Reg) and Full Hole (FH). Their strengths:
- Interchangeability — Any manufacturer’s NC50, for example, mates with another’s, which simplifies rental, repair and mixed inventory.
- Cost and availability — Standardized tooling, gauges and repair make them economical and easy to service worldwide.
- Proven design — Decades of field data and well-understood make-up torques and ratings.
Their limits appear when torque rises: as operating torque approaches the API make-up torque, the single shoulder can be overrun, risking galling, shoulder damage and connection fatigue.
Premium and double-shoulder connections
Premium connections are proprietary designs engineered to extend the performance envelope. Compared with a same-size API connection they typically offer:
- Higher torque capacity — A second shoulder or optimized thread form raises make-up and operating torque, essential for high-torque and extended-reach wells.
- Better sealing — Improved metal-to-metal shoulder contact resists washouts and gas.
- Improved fatigue life — Lower stress concentration and stiffer joints reduce cyclic damage in doglegs.
- Larger bore for the OD — Some designs improve hydraulics at a given tool-joint size.
The trade-offs are cost, licensing and, most importantly, lack of interchangeability: premium connections are generally not intermateable with API or with rival premium designs.
Head-to-head summary
- Torque capacity — API adequate for most wells; premium/double-shoulder for high torque.
- Sealing — API good; premium better for gas and high pressure.
- Fatigue — API acceptable within limits; premium superior in severe doglegs.
- Interchangeability — API excellent; premium poor (proprietary).
- Cost and repair — API low and universal; premium higher and vendor-tied.
How to choose
Base the decision on operating torque, wellpath severity and pressure:
- Standard vertical and moderate directional wells within API torque margins: API connections — economical and interchangeable.
- High-torque, extended-reach or deep directional wells where torque nears API make-up: double-shoulder or premium connections.
- High-pressure or sour gas wells needing tight, fatigue-tolerant seals: premium connections.
Whatever you choose, the connection must be consistent through the string, with proper crossover subs where a change is unavoidable, and matched handling tools so make-up torque is applied and verified correctly.
