Drill pipe inspection classes describe the remaining strength of used tubulars after wear and service, and the DS-1 standard defines how that condition is measured and graded. Because a used tube can look sound yet have lost significant wall, an auditable inspection class is the only reliable basis for knowing what load a joint can safely carry — which is exactly why it matters for rented pipe.
Why classification exists
Drill pipe degrades in service: the outside diameter wears against the borehole and casing, internal erosion and corrosion thin the wall, slip and tong marks concentrate stress, and connections gall or lose shoulder. Rated capacities are based on nominal dimensions, so a worn joint no longer meets its original ratings. Inspection downgrades pipe into classes that carry reduced, published capacity factors, letting a designer derate loads correctly.
The DS-1 standard
DS-1 (originally the T H Hill standard, now published under DNV) is the most widely referenced drill stem inspection standard. It specifies:
- Inspection categories — Tiered scopes of inspection matched to well severity, from basic dimensional checks up to full-body and connection inspection for critical wells.
- Methods — Visual, dimensional, magnetic particle inspection (MPI), ultrasonic wall measurement, electromagnetic inspection (EMI) and others, each with defined procedures.
- Acceptance criteria — Numerical limits for remaining wall, OD wear, imperfection depth, slip-area condition and connection dimensions that determine the assigned class.
Because DS-1 defines both the method and the pass/fail criteria, a DS-1 certificate is auditable and comparable across vendors — a key advantage when renting.
Tube classes and what they mean
Used drill pipe tubes are commonly graded into these classes:
- Premium Class — Minimum 80 percent remaining wall, with OD wear and imperfections within limits. The standard rental and drilling grade, retaining high capacity.
- Class 2 — Minimum 70 percent remaining wall with limited depth of external imperfections; reduced capacity, suitable for less demanding service.
- Class 3 — Further reduced condition, restricted or non-drilling use depending on the operator.
New pipe is handled under its own manufacturing specification (for example API 5DP) and is not a “used” class. Capacity for each class is applied as a derating factor in string design, so a Premium joint and a Class 2 joint of the same size and grade carry different rated loads.
Connections, tool joints and the BHA
Inspection is not limited to the tube body. DS-1 also grades:
- Tool joints and connections — Box and pin OD, shoulder condition, seal, bevel and thread integrity; connections are refaced or recut when out of limits.
- Slip and upset areas — High-stress transition zones checked for cracks and marks.
- Drill collars and BHA components — Connection MPI, dimensional checks and blacklight inspection of thread roots, where fatigue cracks most often start.

Reading an inspection certificate
A useful DS-1 certificate should state, at minimum:
- The inspection category and the standard revision applied.
- The methods used (visual, dimensional, MPI, UT wall, EMI).
- The class assigned per component and the joint count in each class.
- Wall and OD readings or the acceptance basis, and the connection condition.
- Inspector identity, date and equipment calibration status.
Vague “inspected” stamps without methods, criteria and a class are not a substitute for a traceable DS-1 report. Our quality process documents these details for every string.
