Selecting drilling tubulars means choosing the outside diameter (OD), API grade, nominal weight and connection of the drill pipe so the string fits the hole, carries the loads and delivers the required hydraulics. Getting these four variables right is the difference between a string that drills efficiently and one that limits depth, torque or flow.
Start with hole and casing geometry
Tubular selection begins with the well plan, not the pipe catalog. The hole and casing sizes set the usable pipe OD and the annular clearance:
- Annular velocity and hole cleaning — Pipe OD must leave enough annular area to lift cuttings at an adequate velocity without excessive pump pressure.
- Clearance and running — Tool joints must pass freely through casing drift and any restrictions.
- Stiffness — Larger OD pipe is stiffer and stronger but less able to negotiate tight curves in directional drilling.
As a rough starting point: 3.5-inch and 4-inch pipe for slim holes and coiled/workover-scale work, 5-inch for the common 8.5 to 12.25-inch hole range, and 5.5 to 6.625-inch for large-diameter surface holes or deep, high-torque and extended-reach wells.
Choosing the grade
Grade is the steel’s minimum yield strength — E-75, X-95, G-105 or S-135 — and it scales the tensile, torsional and pressure ratings of a given size and weight. Choose grade from the load analysis:
- Shallow to moderate wells with modest loads: E-75 is economical and adequate.
- Deeper wells or higher torque: X-95 or G-105 add capacity without dimensional change.
- Deep, high-torque or extended-reach: S-135, the standard workhorse for demanding wells.
Grade is independent of dimensions, so upgrading grade adds strength while keeping the same OD, bore and weight per foot. For sour wells, grade selection is also constrained by hardness and NACE MR0175 requirements, covered in our sour-service guide.
Choosing the nominal weight
Nominal weight (lb/ft) reflects wall thickness for a given OD. Heavier weights add capacity but change the bore:
- Heavier wall = higher tensile and collapse capacity and a stronger cross-section.
- Heavier wall = smaller internal bore, higher pressure drop and more string weight to hoist.
- Lighter wall = better hydraulics and less hook load, but lower collapse and tensile capacity.
When you need more capacity, decide between grade and weight deliberately: raise grade to gain strength without shrinking the bore; raise weight when you specifically need more collapse resistance or wall.
Choosing the connection
The tool-joint connection must transmit torque and seal without becoming the string’s weakest link. Key considerations:
- Make-up torque must exceed the maximum operating torque with margin.
- Torsional and tensile capacity of the connection should bound the tube capacity so failures, if any, occur predictably.
- Type — standard API rotary-shouldered connections (for example NC and Reg) suit most wells; double-shoulder and premium connections raise the torque envelope for high-torque and extended-reach applications.

Don’t forget the transition and BHA
Tubular selection extends below the drill pipe. Use heavy-weight drill pipe as a transition between limber drill pipe and stiff drill collars, and size the collars for the required weight on bit. A selection checklist
- Confirm hole and casing sizes and the required annular velocity.
- Set drill pipe OD for clearance, hydraulics and stiffness.
- Run the load analysis; pick grade for tensile and torsional needs.
- Pick nominal weight for collapse and wall requirements, watching bore and hook load.
- Select a connection whose make-up torque and capacity bound operating loads.
- Verify sour-service and inspection-class requirements for the actual pipe.
