Azerbaijan’s offshore sector in the Caspian Sea is dominated by two flagship developments. The Azeri-Chirag-Gunashli (ACG) complex is the country’s principal oil producer, while Shah Deniz is a major gas-condensate field whose output feeds the Southern Gas Corridor carrying Caspian gas toward Europe. Both are long-running, platform-based offshore programs operated by BP alongside the state company SOCAR and other partners.

Activity centers on development and infill drilling, deep gas-condensate wells at Shah Deniz, and continued production support at ACG. The offshore setting, deep high-pressure gas reservoirs and the strategic importance of gas exports all raise the bar on equipment specification, certification and delivery reliability.

What that means for the drill string

Offshore ACG and Shah Deniz wells require certified, high-specification tubulars and carefully engineered directional BHAs. Deep gas-condensate sections bring pressure and, in places, sour exposure, so metallurgy and well-control readiness matter. Platform operations also put a premium on correct handling tools and rapid access to recovery equipment.

Delivery into the landlocked Caspian relies on rail transit and Caspian marine mobilization to offshore platforms, planned with vetted regional partners.
