Drilling activity in Brazil pre-salt
Brazil’s pre-salt province, concentrated in the Santos and Campos basins offshore southeastern Brazil, ranks among the most productive offshore developments in the world. The reservoirs lie beneath a thick layer of salt in deep water, so wells must be drilled through long marine risers, mobile salt sections and into deep carbonate reservoirs that can combine high pressure and high temperature. The technical challenge is matched by the scale of production the fields deliver.
Development is led by the national operator Petrobras alongside international majors including Shell, TotalEnergies and Equinor, operating from floating rigs where rig time is extremely costly. The combination of deep water, salt drilling and HPHT reservoirs makes tubular and pressure-control specifications among the most demanding anywhere, with correspondingly rigorous inspection.
What that means for the drill string
Pre-salt wells rely on high-grade 5½” and 6⅝” drill pipe with premium connections to carry the tension and torque of deep, long wells, run with heavy-weight drill pipe and non-magnetic drill collars in the directional BHA. Pressure-control equipment is central given HPHT intervals, and salt drilling places its own demands on the string. The cost of offshore rig time makes inspected, correctly rated tools and rapid mobilization essential.
- Drill pipe — high-grade 5½” and 6⅝” for deepwater wells
- Heavy-weight drill pipe — for the transition zone
- Pressure control — for deepwater HPHT intervals
- Drill collars — including non-magnetic for the directional BHA
Logistics and standards
Brazilian pre-salt operations use metric units with tubulars inspected to API specifications, under the Agência Nacional do Petróleo (ANP) regulatory framework. Offshore logistics depend on shore-base staging and vessel transfer to floating rigs far from shore, so Drillstrings coordinates through regional partners for inspection, serialization and mobilization to supply bases. See our global oilfield rental logistics guide.
Whether you’re mobilizing for a pre-salt program or need rated tools on the critical path, send us your string and we’ll quote within the hour.
