Drilling activity in China

China’s onshore gas activity centers on two challenging basins. The Tarim Basin in the northwest hosts some of the world’s deepest wells, with high-pressure gas and oil at great depth, while the Sichuan Basin is a major tight-gas and shale-gas province, parts of which carry high hydrogen sulfide (H₂S) content. Offshore, Bohai Bay is China’s largest offshore oil-producing region. Activity is led by the national majors — PetroChina and Sinopec onshore and CNOOC offshore.

These programs are technically demanding: ultra-deep, high-pressure wells in Tarim; sour, tight-gas completions in Sichuan; and steady offshore development in Bohai Bay. Chinese operators work to both API and domestic SY industry standards, which shapes how equipment is specified and documented.

What that means for the drill string

Deep, high-pressure Tarim wells demand high-specification tubulars and robust BHAs, while sour Sichuan tight-gas requires NACE-compliant metallurgy and careful well control. Bohai Bay offshore work relies on certified strings and correct handling tools. Across all three, documentation to API and SY requirements matters.

China uses metric units and works to both API and domestic SY tubular specifications, so we map material and inspection documentation to whichever the operator requires. Drillstrings inventory is inspected to DS-1 / API RP 7G-2 categories with serialized traceability and full material certification.
