Egypt’s upstream sector runs on two very different plays. The Western Desert is a mature onshore oil province with decades of production history, worked by operators such as Apache and BP alongside the state’s joint-venture companies, where drilling is high-volume, cost-sensitive and dominated by development and infill wells. Offshore, the East Mediterranean has become one of the region’s most important gas provinces, anchored by ENI’s giant Zohr field and a cluster of deepwater and shelf discoveries feeding domestic demand and LNG export.

The state holding companies EGPC (oil) and EGAS (gas) sit at the center of licensing and partnership, and international operators typically drill through production-sharing agreements. The mix of shallow onshore development and deepwater exploration means demand spans everything from routine workover strings to high-specification offshore drilling tools.

What that means for the drill string

Western Desert wells favor conventional, reliable strings and fast turnaround, while East Mediterranean gas wells push into deeper, higher-pressure sections that demand premium-connection tubulars and carefully specified BHAs. Some intervals carry sour (H₂S) exposure, so NACE MR0175 material selection matters where wet gas and CO₂ are present.

Logistics and standards

Egypt works in metric units with API-based tubular specifications, and documentation is routed through EGPC/EGAS and their operating joint ventures. Drillstrings inventory is inspected to DS-1 / API RP 7G-2 categories with serialized traceability, and we coordinate customs clearance, inland trucking to Western Desert yards and marine mobilization to offshore East Mediterranean rigs through vetted regional partners.
