Drilling activity in the Gulf of Mexico

The U.S. Gulf of Mexico is the country’s most important offshore province, with activity centered on deepwater and ultra-deepwater developments across the outer continental shelf. Wells here can combine long water columns with deep sub-salt and sub-surface targets, producing demanding combinations of pressure, temperature and, in places, sour conditions. Major discoveries in the deepwater trend continue to drive development, tieback and infill drilling.

Activity is led by operators including Shell, BP, Chevron and independents such as LLOG Exploration, operating from floating rigs where every hour of rig time is costly. The offshore environment leaves no margin for tool failure, so tubular and pressure-control specifications are the most stringent in the industry, and inspection standards are correspondingly rigorous.

What that means for the drill string

Deepwater Gulf wells rely on high-grade 5½” and 6⅝” drill pipe with premium connections to carry the tension and torque of deep, long wells, run with heavy-weight drill pipe and non-magnetic drill collars in the directional BHA. Pressure-control equipment is central given HPHT and sour intervals, and sour-service material is specified where H2S is present. The cost of offshore rig time makes inspected, correctly rated tools and rapid mobilization essential.

Logistics and standards
