Drilling activity in the Haynesville

The Haynesville Shale underlies East Texas and North Louisiana and is one of the most important dry-gas plays in the United States, prized for its proximity to Gulf Coast LNG export terminals and petrochemical demand. It is a deep formation — typically drilled at depths that produce elevated bottomhole pressures and temperatures — which puts it firmly in high-pressure, high-temperature (HPHT) territory. The reservoir is a productive, overpressured shale developed with horizontal wells and intensive completions.

Development is led by operators including Comstock Resources, Aethon Energy and Southwestern Energy, with activity closely tied to gas prices and LNG offtake. The demanding downhole environment raises the bar on tubular and tool specifications compared with shallower, cooler plays, making inspected, correctly rated equipment essential.

What that means for the drill string

Haynesville wells rely on 5” and 5½” S-135 drill pipe as the workhorse, but the HPHT environment elevates the importance of connection integrity, wall condition and correct material grades. Strings are run with heavy-weight drill pipe and non-magnetic drill collars for the directional BHA, and pressure-control equipment is central given the overpressured intervals. Rigorous inspection and traceability are non-negotiable here.
