Drilling activity in India
India’s upstream sector works across three very different settings. The Krishna-Godavari (KG) basin off the east coast is the country’s deepwater gas frontier, developed by Reliance-BP and ONGC. The Mumbai High complex off the west coast is a mature offshore oil province operated largely by ONGC, where redevelopment and infill drilling dominate. Onshore, Rajasthan hosts significant oil production led by Vedanta, with Oil India and ONGC active in other onshore regions.
The Directorate General of Hydrocarbons (DGH) oversees upstream activity and licensing, and national operators run large, tender-driven programs. The span from deepwater gas to mature offshore oil to onshore development means demand ranges from high-specification deepwater strings to conventional workover tools.
What that means for the drill string
KG deepwater gas wells require premium-connection, high-specification tubulars and carefully engineered directional BHAs, while Mumbai High redevelopment relies on dependable strings and ready fishing tools for re-entry on legacy wells. Rajasthan onshore programs favor efficient conventional strings. Some intervals carry H₂S or CO₂ exposure, making metallurgy a consideration on sour wells.
