Kazakhstan is anchored by three of the world’s giant fields, all in the greater Caspian region. Tengiz and Karachaganak are onshore supergiants, while Kashagan sits on the shallow northern Caspian shelf; together they define the country’s production and its technical challenges. These fields are notorious for being extremely sour — very high hydrogen sulfide (H₂S) content — and high-pressure, which makes metallurgy, well control and equipment integrity central concerns on every well.

The operating consortia — Tengizchevroil at Tengiz, NCOC at Kashagan and KPO at Karachaganak — run long, capital-intensive development and expansion programs. Drilling and workover activity here is unforgiving: the combination of sour gas, high pressure and Caspian logistics means equipment must be correctly specified, fully documented and reliably delivered.

What that means for the drill string

Sour, high-pressure service dictates the drill string. Tubulars must be selected to NACE MR0175 / ISO 15156 with controlled hardness and verified metallurgy, and BHAs must be built for high-pressure control and integrity. There is no room for uncertified or marginally specified material on these critical wells.

Logistics and standards

Kazakhstan uses metric units and accepts API tubulars, but operators and the regulator often require GOST-equivalent documentation, so we map material certificates and inspection records accordingly. Inventory is inspected to DS-1 / API RP 7G-2 categories with serialized traceability and NACE material certification. Delivery relies on Caspian shipping and rail corridors, so we plan customs, cross-border transit and staging with vetted regional partners well ahead of the well.
