Drilling activity in Libya
Libya’s oil industry is built on the Sirte Basin, a rift basin in the north-central part of the country that hosts most of its major fields and the bulk of its production. Activity is predominantly onshore and oriented toward redevelopment: restoring output at legacy fields, drilling infill and workover wells, and gradually returning to appraisal and exploration as conditions allow. The recovery has been uneven, but the resource base — Africa’s largest proven reserves — keeps operators committed to rebuilding capacity.
The National Oil Corporation (NOC) sits at the center of the sector, operating both directly and through joint ventures with international partners such as ENI and the Waha consortium. Because much of the near-term work is redevelopment of established fields, demand skews toward dependable drilling and workover strings and rapid access to fishing and recovery tools.
What that means for the drill string
Redevelopment and infill drilling in the Sirte Basin call for robust, well-inspected conventional strings that can be trusted on wells with existing downhole complications and legacy casing. Workover and re-entry work raises the likelihood of stuck pipe and fishing operations, so recovery tooling availability is a real advantage.
- Drill pipe — for redevelopment and infill drilling
- Heavy-weight drill pipe — for weight-on-bit and directional work
- Drill collars — for stable, controlled BHAs
- Fishing tools — for re-entry and stuck-pipe recovery on legacy wells
Re-entry and workover programs are a natural fit for staged rental strings.
Logistics and standards
Libya operates in metric units with API tubular specifications, and technical documentation is routed through NOC and its joint-venture operators. Drillstrings inventory is inspected to DS-1 / API RP 7G-2 categories with serialized traceability, and we manage customs clearance, staging through neighboring hubs and inland transport through vetted regional partners — recognizing that reliable logistics is often the deciding factor here. We act as an extension of an operator’s or drilling contractor’s rental fleet rather than a competing in-country provider; see our global logistics guide and network for how that works.
If you’re planning a Sirte Basin campaign or a redevelopment program, get in touch and we’ll build a documented rental package around your well plan.
