Drilling activity in the Marcellus and Utica

The Marcellus Shale is the largest natural-gas field in the United States, a black-shale formation blanketing much of Pennsylvania, West Virginia and eastern Ohio, with the deeper Utica Shale lying beneath it across a similar footprint. Together they form a stacked, dry-gas-dominated system, with liquids-rich windows on the western and southwestern flanks. The rock is a highly productive, low-permeability shale developed almost entirely with horizontal wells and multi-stage fracturing.

Development is led by operators including EQT, Range Resources and CNX Resources, in a mature gas basin where drilling efficiency and pad economics drive activity. Terrain in the Appalachian region is more varied than the flat plains of many U.S. plays, which shapes pad access and logistics. Most work is development and infill drilling, with the deeper Utica adding depth-driven demands on the string.

What that means for the drill string

Marcellus and Utica laterals rely on 5” and 5½” S-135 drill pipe as the workhorse, run with heavy-weight drill pipe to add weight-on-bit and smooth the transition into the horizontal. Deeper Utica targets increase depth-related tension and torque, raising the importance of connection integrity and inspected tubulars. Directional BHAs use non-magnetic drill collars for MWD isolation, along with stabilizers and jars for stuck-pipe contingencies.
