Mexico’s upstream sector spans onshore and offshore provinces. The Burgos Basin in the northeast, the southward extension of the U.S. Gulf Coast gas trend, is a natural-gas producing region developed onshore. Offshore, the Bay of Campeche in the southern Gulf of Mexico hosts some of the country’s most prolific fields in shallow water, historically the backbone of national production. Together they present a wide range of well types, from onshore gas wells to shallow-water offshore development.

Activity is led by the national oil company Pemex, increasingly alongside international operators such as Woodside and Eni following the sector’s opening to partnership. The mix of onshore and offshore work, and of national and international operators, means well designs and logistics vary widely across the country’s basins.

What that means for the drill string

Burgos onshore gas wells rely on 5” and 5½” drill pipe run with heavy-weight drill pipe and a directional BHA. Bay of Campeche shallow-water wells add offshore demands — premium connections, pressure-control equipment and rigorous inspection given the marine environment. Across both, inspected tubulars, correct grades and traceability are what keep programs running safely.
