Mozambique’s upstream story is written almost entirely offshore, in the Rovuma Basin in the far north of the country. A series of very large deepwater gas discoveries there support some of the biggest LNG projects on the African continent, led by operators including TotalEnergies, ExxonMobil and ENI across the different offshore areas. Drilling is technically demanding: deepwater water depths, long, high-rate gas wells, and exacting well-control requirements.

Because the province is relatively young and the fields are remote, the in-country supply chain is still nascent. Ports, fabrication and service infrastructure are being developed alongside the projects themselves, which means much of the specialized drilling equipment is imported and staged through regional hubs. That places a premium on planning, documentation and dependable logistics.

What that means for the drill string

Deepwater Rovuma gas wells demand premium-connection, high-specification tubulars and carefully engineered BHAs able to handle the depths and pressures involved. Well-control readiness is non-negotiable, and the remoteness of operations makes on-location availability of recovery tooling especially valuable.
