Drilling activity in Saudi Arabia
Saudi Arabia is the center of gravity for global conventional oil, holding the largest proven reserves and sustaining one of the biggest drilling programmes in the industry. The Ghawar field — the largest conventional oil field ever discovered — remains the backbone of production, complemented by other giants such as Safaniya offshore and Khurais onshore. Beyond oil, the Kingdom is pushing a major unconventional and conventional gas expansion, including the Jafurah gas development, to feed domestic power and petrochemicals and free up crude for export.
Nearly all upstream activity runs through Saudi Aramco, which operates an enormous onshore and offshore rig fleet across the Eastern Province, the Rub’ al Khali margins and the Arabian Gulf. The scale and continuity of the programme make tubular availability, sour-service compliance and vendor qualification central to any equipment supply relationship.
What that means for the drill string
Deep, high-pressure and often sour reservoirs demand robust, certified strings. Standard drill pipe and heavy-weight drill pipe form the backbone, with drill collars and non-magnetic collars for the directional BHA, and sour-service material where H2S is present. Long programmes also mean fishing and contingency capability must be readily available.
- Drill pipe — NACE-compliant strings where required
- Heavy-weight drill pipe — for weight-on-bit and stiffness transition
- Drill collars — including non-magnetic for MWD isolation
- Fishing tools — recovery strings for stuck-pipe events
Where reservoirs are sour, our sour-service tubular guidance explains the NACE MR0175 material and documentation expected.
Logistics and standards
Saudi operations run in metric units against API tubular standards layered with Saudi Aramco’s own engineering and vendor requirements. Procurement flows through an approved vendor list, and business is markedly relationship-led — quotes and mobilisations are frequently coordinated directly over WhatsApp. Sour-service (NACE MR0175) material is a recurring requirement, so inspection records and material certificates travel with every string. We work with qualified in-Kingdom partners to keep inventory inspected, serialised and moving.
