The Gulf of Thailand and the waters off southern Vietnam form a busy offshore oil and gas province. In Thailand, the Gulf of Thailand hosts numerous producing gas and oil fields, characterized by compartmentalized reservoirs and large numbers of development wells, with PTTEP and Chevron among the active operators. Off Vietnam, the Cuu Long basin is a major oil producer and the Nam Con Son basin an important gas province, developed by operators including PTTEP, PVEP and their partners.

Both settings are almost entirely offshore, with steady development and infill drilling and selective exploration. The compartmentalized geology in the Gulf of Thailand in particular drives high well counts, which puts a premium on equipment availability, correct handling tools and efficient turnaround.

What that means for the drill string

High-well-count offshore development favors dependable, certified strings and directional BHAs delivered on schedule, while deeper gas sections in Nam Con Son require higher-specification tubulars. Platform operations put a premium on correct handling tools, and offshore locations make ready fishing tools valuable. Some gas intervals carry CO₂ or H₂S, so metallurgy is a consideration on sour wells.
