Drilling activity in Vaca Muerta
Vaca Muerta is a marine shale formation in the Neuquén Basin of western Argentina and stands as the largest unconventional play outside North America. It contains both shale-oil and shale-gas windows and has become the focus of Argentina’s upstream growth, with development accelerating as infrastructure and drilling efficiency have improved. Like leading U.S. shales, it is developed with horizontal wells, multi-stage fracturing and increasingly long laterals from multi-well pads.
Development is led by the national operator YPF alongside international and independent operators including Vista Energy, Shell and Chevron. As the play matures, cycle times and lateral lengths have grown, moving Vaca Muerta closer to North American unconventional benchmarks and raising the demand for reliable tubular supply in a more remote market.
What that means for the drill string
Vaca Muerta’s long laterals generate high torque and drag, so 5” and 5½” S-135 drill pipe is the workhorse, often in a tapered string with heavy-weight drill pipe to add weight-on-bit and smooth the stiffness transition into the lateral. Directional sections rely on non-magnetic drill collars to isolate MWD tools, along with stabilizers and drilling jars for stuck-pipe contingencies. Reliable supply into a growing, remote play is a real competitive edge.
- Drill pipe — 5” and 5½” S-135 for long laterals
- Heavy-weight drill pipe — spiral HWDP for the transition zone
- Drill collars — including non-magnetic for the directional BHA
- Directional drilling — support for long-lateral programs
Logistics and standards
Vaca Muerta operations use metric units with tubulars inspected to API specifications, under Argentina’s Secretaría de Energía and provincial authorities. Getting tools into the Neuquén Basin depends on well-planned overland logistics, and communication over WhatsApp is common practice. Drillstrings works through regional partners for inspection, serialization and mobilization — see our global oilfield rental logistics guide.
Whether you’re spudding a new pad or recovering from downhole trouble on the critical path, send us your string and we’ll quote within the hour.
