Vaca Muerta is a marine shale formation in the Neuquén Basin of western Argentina and stands as the largest unconventional play outside North America. It contains both shale-oil and shale-gas windows and has become the focus of Argentina’s upstream growth, with development accelerating as infrastructure and drilling efficiency have improved. Like leading U.S. shales, it is developed with horizontal wells, multi-stage fracturing and increasingly long laterals from multi-well pads.

Development is led by the national operator YPF alongside international and independent operators including Vista Energy, Shell and Chevron. As the play matures, cycle times and lateral lengths have grown, moving Vaca Muerta closer to North American unconventional benchmarks and raising the demand for reliable tubular supply in a more remote market.

What that means for the drill string
