The Western Canadian Sedimentary Basin (WCSB) underlies most of Alberta and northeastern British Columbia and hosts two of Canada’s premier unconventional plays: the Montney and the Duvernay. Both are liquids-rich, delivering natural gas together with valuable condensate and natural gas liquids, which underpins their economics. They are developed with horizontal wells and multi-stage fracturing, drilled from multi-well pads much like leading U.S. plays.

Development is led by operators including Canadian Natural Resources, Tourmaline Oil and ARC Resources, in a mature basin with deep service infrastructure. Remote well sites and severe winters across Alberta and BC make reliable supply of tubulars and downhole tools an operational consideration, and the cross-border nature of the industry means both metric and imperial conventions appear in practice.

What that means for the drill string

WCSB laterals rely on 5” and 5½” S-135 drill pipe as the workhorse, run with heavy-weight drill pipe to add weight-on-bit and smooth the transition into the horizontal section. Directional BHAs use non-magnetic drill collars to isolate MWD tools, along with stabilizers and jars. Cold-weather operations raise the importance of tool condition, connection integrity and traceable inspection.
