What API RP 7G-2 is
API RP 7G-2 is the API recommended practice titled “Inspection and Classification of Used Drill Stem Elements.” It provides standardized procedures for inspecting used drill pipe, tool joints, drill collars and other drill stem components, and it defines the classification of drill pipe into categories such as Premium Class and Class 2 based on measured wall thickness and condition.
The document succeeded and expanded on the inspection guidance formerly found in API RP 7G. It specifies the dimensional checks, wall-thickness measurement, and nondestructive methods used to detect and evaluate defects, together with the acceptance limits that determine each class.
What it defines
- Inspection methods — dimensional gauging, EMI, MPI and ultrasonic techniques.
- Classification — Premium (minimum ~80% remaining wall) and Class 2 (minimum ~70% remaining wall).
- Acceptance criteria — limits on wall loss, cuts, cracks and connection wear.
By standardizing methods and limits, RP 7G-2 lets operators and rental providers agree on a consistent inspection scope and grade for a string.
