Box and Pin

Definition

Box and Pin — Box and pin are the two mating halves of a threaded tubular connection — the pin is the externally threaded male end and the box is the internally threaded female end — that screw together to join drill pipe, collars and other downhole tubulars.

Pin and box defined

Every threaded downhole connection has a pin and a box. The pin is the male member with external threads that taper toward its end; the box is the female member with matching internal threads. When made up, the pin threads into the box until the sealing shoulders contact, forming a pressure-tight, torque-carrying joint.

On a joint of drill pipe, one tool joint is machined as a pin and the other as a box, so consecutive joints always present a pin to a box down the string. The same convention applies to drill collars, subs, bit connections and virtually all rotary-shouldered tubulars.

Why the distinction matters

  • Make-up — connections are torqued to a recommended range so the shoulder — not the threads — carries load and seals.
  • Handling — thread protectors go on both the exposed box and pin during transport to prevent damage.
  • Crossovers — a crossover sub bridges a box of one connection type to a pin of another.
