Make-Up Torque — Make-up torque is the rotational torque applied to a threaded tubular connection when screwing it together, set within a manufacturer-specified range so the sealing shoulder is loaded correctly without over-stressing the threads.

What make-up torque is
Make-up torque is the amount of torque applied when a pin and box are threaded together. On a rotary-shouldered connection, correct make-up preloads the sealing shoulder so it stays in firm contact under downhole tension, bending and internal pressure. Too little torque lets the shoulder separate and the connection back off or leak; too much can yield the box or pin.
Recommended values are published per connection type and size in references such as API RP 7G-2, and depend on the connection’s OD, ID, thread type and steel strength. On the rig, iron roughnecks and power tongs apply the torque and it is verified against the recommended range.
Applying it correctly
- Range, not a single number — every connection has a minimum and maximum; aim for the mid-point.
- Thread compound — the friction factor of the dope affects the torque needed to achieve the correct preload.
- Double-shoulder connections — an extra torque shoulder raises the allowable make-up and torsional capacity.
