Casing Running Tool — A casing running tool is a top-drive-mounted device that grips casing internally or externally to run, rotate, reciprocate and circulate through it, combining the functions of an elevator, spider, power tong and fill-up tool in one unit.

What a casing running tool does
A casing running tool (CRT) connects to the top drive and engages each joint of casing with an internal spear or external slip assembly. It lifts the joint, applies make-up torque through the top drive, and can rotate and reciprocate the string to help it pass tight spots — capabilities that plain elevators and tongs cannot provide. A built-in fill-up and circulating pack-off lets the crew fill the casing and circulate without a separate cementing head on connection.
By combining hoisting, torque, rotation and circulation, the CRT streamlines casing running and removes crew from the stabbing area, improving both speed and safety on running operations.
