Stabbing Guide — A stabbing guide is a funnel-shaped tool placed over the box connection of a tubular to center the pin of the incoming joint during stabbing, protecting the threads and shoulder from damage as the connection is made up.

What a stabbing guide does
A stabbing guide is a split, funnel-shaped fixture that seats over the exposed box of the joint suspended in the spider or slips. As the crew lowers the next joint, the guide’s tapered mouth catches the pin and steers it into alignment with the box, preventing the pin from clashing against the box face. This protects the precision threads and sealing shoulders that determine connection integrity.
Stabbing guides are especially important on premium casing and tubing connections, where even minor thread or seal damage during stabbing can cause a leak path or a rejected connection. They are sized to the tubular OD and connection type and are often used with a CRT or power tongs.
Why thread protection matters
Rotary-shouldered and premium connections seal on machined shoulders and metal-to-metal surfaces. A single ding from a mis-stab can require re-facing or scrapping a joint. The stabbing guide, together with slow, controlled lowering, keeps stabbing damage to a minimum and supports first-time make-up.
