Hydraulic Jar — A hydraulic jar is a jarring tool that uses a metered hydraulic time delay to let the operator build tension or compression before it fires a high-energy impact blow to free stuck pipe.

How a hydraulic jar works
A hydraulic jar delays its firing by forcing fluid through a restriction as the mandrel is pulled through a chamber. This time delay lets the operator overpull (or set down) and hold the load while the string stretches and stores energy; when the piston clears the restriction the jar releases suddenly, driving a mandrel against an anvil to deliver a powerful hammer blow at the free point. The delay makes the tool forgiving to operate and lets the driller tune impact force by varying the pull.
Drilling vs. fishing service
Hydraulic jars run both as drilling insurance in the BHA and as dedicated fishing tools on a fishing string above an overshot or spear. In fishing work they are typically paired with an accelerator that stores extra energy and sharpens the blow directed at the stuck fish.
