Iron Roughneck

Definition

Iron Roughneck — An iron roughneck is a floor-mounted, hydraulically powered machine that combines a spinning wrench and a torque wrench to make up and break out drill pipe connections, removing crew members from the hazardous area between manual tongs.

What an iron roughneck does

An iron roughneck automates the make-up and break-out of tool-joint connections during tripping and drilling. It carries a spinning system to rotate the joint quickly through the loose threads and a torque wrench with an upper and lower jaw to apply or release the final make-up torque. The machine is positioned at the well center on an arm or track and clamps the connection so no crew member stands in the tong path.

By replacing manually swung rig tongs and a spinning chain or wrench, the iron roughneck greatly reduces line-of-fire and pinch-point injuries while improving connection consistency.

Torque control

The torque wrench measures and displays applied torque, allowing the driller to make up each connection to the recommended value per API RP 7G-2 and the connection manufacturer. Consistent, recorded torque reduces washouts and back-offs and helps control drill-pipe fatigue at the tool joint.
