Mud Weight — Mud weight is the density of the drilling fluid, usually expressed in pounds per gallon or specific gravity, and it sets the hydrostatic pressure the mud column exerts to balance formation pressure and maintain well control.

What mud weight is
Mud weight is the density of the circulating drilling fluid, commonly measured in pounds per gallon (ppg), kilograms per cubic metre, or specific gravity (SG). It is the operator’s primary lever for controlling downhole pressure: raising the mud weight increases the hydrostatic pressure of the column, and lowering it reduces that pressure. The chosen mud weight must keep the well overbalanced against pore pressure while staying below the fracture gradient to avoid lost circulation.
Because hydrostatic pressure equals a constant times mud weight times true vertical depth, a small change in mud weight has a large effect deep in the hole. Mud weight is checked regularly with a mud balance and adjusted by weighting up (adding barite) or diluting.
The mud-weight window
The safe operating range is bounded by the pore pressure below and the fracture pressure above. Drilling within this window keeps the well controlled without breaking down the formation; a narrow window demands tight control and often influences casing-seat selection.
