Well Control — Well control is the practice of maintaining and restoring the balance between wellbore pressure and formation pressure to prevent the uncontrolled flow of formation fluids, using hydrostatic pressure as the primary barrier and the BOP stack as the secondary barrier.

What well control means
Well control is the set of principles, equipment and procedures that keep formation fluids from flowing into the wellbore uncontrolled. The primary barrier is the hydrostatic pressure of the mud column, which is kept at or above formation pore pressure by managing mud weight. If that primary barrier is lost and an influx (a kick) enters the well, the secondary barrier — the blowout preventer stack and associated drill-string valves — is used to shut in the well and circulate the influx out.
Effective well control depends on early kick detection, correct shut-in procedures, and controlled circulation methods such as the Driller’s Method or the Wait-and-Weight Method to remove the influx while keeping bottomhole pressure constant.
