Premium Connection

Definition

Premium Connection — A premium connection is a proprietary rotary-shouldered thread — usually double-shouldered — that delivers higher torsional capacity, better fatigue resistance and improved sealing than standard API connections, used in high-torque and extended-reach drilling.

Also known as: premium connections, proprietary connection, high-torque connection

What a premium connection is

A premium connection is a manufacturer-proprietary rotary-shouldered connection engineered to outperform standard API threads. Most use a double-shoulder design — adding a secondary internal torque shoulder — which raises torsional yield capacity and improves the connection’s fatigue life under high bending loads.

Premium connections are common on drill pipe and BHA components used for extended-reach, deep, and high-torque directional wells, where API single-shoulder connections would reach their torque limit. Examples include the various double-shoulder families offered by tubular manufacturers.

Advantages

  • Higher make-up torque — the second shoulder shares load, allowing more torque before yield.
  • Fatigue resistance — optimized thread profiles and stress-relief features extend service life.
  • Sealing — tighter tolerances improve gas-tight and high-pressure integrity.

Renting premium-connection pipe

Premium connections must be matched precisely — a pin and box of different proprietary families will not make up. We rent drill pipe and BHA components with premium connections and verify compatibility before shipment — contact us with your connection type.
