Shock Sub — A shock sub is a BHA tool with a spring or elastomer damping element that absorbs axial vibration and bit bounce, protecting the bit, downhole tools, and drill string from destructive shock loads.

What a shock sub does
A shock sub is placed near the bit in the bottomhole assembly to cushion the axial shock and vibration generated as the bit chews through hard or interbedded formations. Using a spring stack, elastomer element, or gas chamber, it lets the mandrel stroke a short distance and damps the oscillations that otherwise travel up the string. This smooths the weight on bit, reduces bit bounce, and lowers the peak loads seen by connections and sensitive downhole electronics.
Where it helps
Shock subs earn their place in hard, chert-bearing, or broken formations and where roller-cone bits tend to bounce. By protecting MWD and other downhole tools from vibration damage and by extending bit and connection life, they can improve rate of penetration and reduce trips caused by fatigue failures.
Why it matters for rentals
The right damping rating depends on hole size, WOB, and formation, so operators often rent a shock sub matched to each interval rather than owning a single fixed configuration.
