Bottomhole Assembly — A bottomhole assembly (BHA) is the lower portion of the drill string running from the bit up to the drill pipe, made up of the bit, drill collars, stabilizers, and specialized tools that provide weight on bit and control the direction and trajectory of the wellbore.

What the BHA does
The bottomhole assembly is the working end of the drill string. It sits below the drill pipe and typically includes the drill bit, drill collars, heavy-weight drill pipe, stabilizers, and any downhole tools such as a mud motor, MWD, jars, or a rotary steerable system. Its two core jobs are to apply controlled weight on bit (WOB) and to govern the direction the hole takes.
How BHA design controls the well
The arrangement and placement of collars and stabilizers determines whether the assembly builds, drops, or holds angle. A stiff, fully stabilized “packed” BHA holds inclination, while a pendulum or fulcrum assembly drops or builds angle for directional work. Collars supply the compressive weight needed at the bit while keeping the flexible drill pipe in tension above the neutral point, protecting it from buckling and fatigue.
Why it matters for rentals
Because every well has a unique trajectory and formation profile, BHA design is rarely one-size- fits-all. Renting individual components lets operators tune stiffness, gauge, and length for each run without carrying idle inventory.
