Stabilizer

Definition

Stabilizer — A stabilizer is a BHA tool with raised blades that centralize the drill string in the borehole, controlling bit trajectory, reducing vibration, and maintaining hole gauge during drilling.

What a stabilizer does

A stabilizer is a short, near-bit or string tool whose gauge blades contact the borehole wall to keep the bottomhole assembly concentric in the hole. By fixing the position of the BHA at one or more points, stabilizers control the side forces at the bit and therefore the wellbore’s tendency to build, drop, or hold angle. They also reduce lateral vibration and whirl that damage bits and connections, and they help maintain a full-gauge hole.

Types and placement

Common designs include integral-blade, welded-blade, and sleeve-type stabilizers, with either straight or spiral blades. A near-bit stabilizer placed directly above the bit acts as a fulcrum; string stabilizers set higher in the assembly tune stiffness. The spacing between stabilizers is the primary lever a directional driller uses to set the dogleg severity and trajectory of a rotary BHA.
