Standpipe Pressure

Definition

Standpipe Pressure — Standpipe pressure is the total circulating pressure measured at the standpipe as mud is pumped, equal to the sum of all friction pressure losses through the surface lines, drill string, bit and annulus, and it is a key indicator of downhole and well conditions.

What standpipe pressure is

Standpipe pressure (SPP) is the pressure read at the standpipe on the rig, representing the pump pressure needed to circulate mud through the whole system at a given flow rate. It is the sum of the friction (dynamic) pressure losses through the surface equipment, down the drill string, across the bit nozzles, and back up the annulus. Standpipe pressure does not include hydrostatic pressure, because the static columns inside and outside the string largely balance.

Because SPP reflects the condition of the entire flow path, changes in it are an important diagnostic: a rising SPP can indicate a plugging bit or a packing-off annulus, while a falling SPP can indicate a washout in the string, a lost bit nozzle, or a pump problem.

Why SPP is monitored

  • Washout detection — a sudden drop can mean a hole in the string.
  • Pack-off and bit balling — a rise can warn of poor hole cleaning or a plugged bit.
  • Well control — SPP is held constant during kill circulation to keep bottomhole pressure steady.

Together with flow and pit data, standpipe pressure is central to reading what is happening downhole.
