Well control barriers are the tested, independent elements that prevent formation fluids from flowing uncontrolled to surface. Most people picture the BOP stack sealing the annulus — but a kick can also come up the inside of the drill string, and that path is closed by a separate family of tools: IBOPs, kelly cocks and full-opening safety valves. This guide explains those drill-string barriers, how they are operated, and how they fit the industry’s two-barrier philosophy.
The two-barrier philosophy
Sound well control requires two independent, tested barriers between the reservoir and the environment at all times. During normal drilling, the primary barrier is the hydrostatic mud column; the secondary is the BOP stack plus the drill-string valves. When a kick (an influx of formation fluid) occurs, the crew must be able to close every flow path — the annulus and the drill-string bore.
- The annulus is sealed by the annular preventer and pipe/blind rams of the BOP stack.
- The drill-string bore is sealed by internal valves: kelly cocks, full-opening safety valves and float valves.
Without the drill-string barrier, closing the annular BOP alone would simply divert the influx up the open pipe. That is why these tools are always on the rig floor and in the crew’s drill.
Drill-string barrier tools
Kelly cocks (upper and lower)
On a kelly rig, two manually operated valves bracket the kelly:
- Upper kelly cock — mounted above the kelly (or above the saver sub on a top drive). It isolates the swivel/top-drive and standpipe from the string.
- Lower kelly cock (drill-string valve) — mounted below the kelly. Being below the kelly, it can be run into the hole and closed to isolate the string from below.
Together they let the crew shut in flow above and below the kelly. On top-drive rigs, an equivalent manually operated top-drive IBOP (often a combination of a remotely operated and a manual valve) serves the same purpose.
Full-opening safety valve (FOSV)
The full-opening safety valve, also called a drill-pipe safety valve, is a full-bore ball valve kept open and ready on the rig floor. During a kick with the kelly or top drive disconnected, the crew stabs the FOSV into the open drill pipe, makes it up, and closes it to stop upward flow. Its key feature is a full internal bore when open — so once the string is secured, you can strip, circulate or run wireline through it without a restriction.
Inside BOP / gray valve (drop-in dart valve)
An inside BOP (a flapper or dart-type check valve) can be dropped or made up into the string to allow you to pump down but not up — securing the string while still permitting circulation to kill the well. It is often stabbed after the FOSV to provide a check-valve barrier.
Float valves
A float valve in the BHA is a check valve that prevents backflow up the string during normal drilling and connections. While it provides a passive barrier, it is not a substitute for the operable surface valves in a full well-control response.

Using the barriers in a well-control event
When a kick is detected, a typical drill-string response is:
- Space out and shut in — stop the pump, set slips, and secure the string.
- Close a drill-string valve — shut the lower kelly cock or top-drive IBOP to isolate the bore.
- Stab and close the FOSV if the string is open (e.g., during a connection or trip).
- Install an inside BOP to allow pump-down circulation for the kill.
- Close the annular / rams to seal the annulus.
- Circulate the kick out using a controlled kill method while both barriers hold.
Speed and correct sequence are everything, which is why these valves are drilled repeatedly and kept staged on the floor with the correct crossovers to fit whatever pipe is in the string.
Testing, certification and readiness
Drill-string barriers are only barriers if they are tested and ready:
- Function and pressure testing at defined intervals per the well program and regulator.
- Crossovers on hand to stab the FOSV into any tubular in the string, including drill pipe, HWDP and drill collars.
- Correct operating tools (valve wrenches, handles) staged at the well center.
- Current certification and inspection records kept per our quality program.
