Rental support for well intervention

Well intervention is any operation performed on a completed, usually live, well to restore or improve production or to make a downhole repair without a full workover rig. It spans coiled-tubing work, remedial cementing to repair casing or isolate zones, scale and fill cleanouts, and a range of downhole intervention programs. Because the well is live, the defining requirement is verified pressure-control barriers, backed by the right tubulars and downhole tools. What an intervention program needs

  • Workstring tubing provides the jointed-pipe string for remedial cementing, cleanouts and other intervention tasks that support or complement coiled tubing.

Barriers first, always

The controlling principle of intervention is that the well is live, so a failure of pressure control is a well-control event. That is why the barrier equipment — and its verified pressure rating — comes first in planning any intervention, and why we pressure-test and certify every barrier before it leaves the yard. Sizing the intervention string

A jointed-pipe intervention string is sized to pass the completion drift, reach the target depth, and carry the internal pressure of remedial cementing or the pull loads of a cleanout. Because interventions run on a live well, the connection matters as much as the body: it participates in the pressure barrier and must be rated and tested to the working pressure. Confirm the completion tally — size, weight, grade and drift — before mobilizing so the string passes cleanly and makes up against whatever it engages downhole. Verifying barriers before the job

The controlling rule of live-well work is two tested, independent barriers between formation and surface at all times. Every barrier — surface valve, in-string check, packer — is pressure-tested to its rated working pressure and certified before it counts. An unverified rating is an assumption, not a barrier. When a barrier is to be installed or removed during the job, the sequence is planned so the two-barrier rule is never broken. Common pitfalls

  • Skipping the pressure test — a barrier that has not been verified may not hold.
  • String will not drift — a wrong tally costs a trip on a live, time-critical well.
  • Breaking the two-barrier rule during a barrier change-out.
  • Wrong material for sour service — H2S demands NACE MR0175 material throughout the barrier envelope.

A short worked example

For a scale cleanout in a live 3½” tubing completion, a common jointed-pipe support string is 2⅜” or 2⅞” workstring tubing in a grade rated above the anticipated pull and circulating pressure, run with a tested surface pressure-control stack and an in-string check valve so two independent barriers stand at all times. We confirm the drift and connection against the completion tally, pressure-test the barriers to the working pressure, and stage the string with fishing tools on standby.
