Mud Motor

Definition

Mud Motor — A mud motor is a downhole tool that converts the hydraulic energy of circulating drilling fluid into rotation at the bit, allowing directional drilling and increased rate of penetration without turning the entire drill string from surface.

How a mud motor works

A mud motor is a positive displacement motor (PDM) based on a helical rotor turning inside an elastomer stator — a reverse Moineau pump. As drilling fluid is pumped through the power section, it forces the rotor to turn, driving the bit directly. Because the bit rotates independently of the drill pipe, the driller can drill while sliding (string not rotating) to build or turn the trajectory, or rotate the string for a straighter path.

Directional drilling with a motor

A steerable motor includes an adjustable bent housing that sets a small tilt near the bit. In sliding mode the bend points the bit to build, drop, or turn the hole along a planned dogleg severity; in rotating mode the bend orbits and the hole drills nominally straight. Paired with MWD for real-time toolface and surveys, the motor is a proven, economical steering method for directional and horizontal wells.
