Extended Reach Drilling

Definition

Extended Reach Drilling — Extended reach drilling (ERD) is the drilling of wells with an exceptionally high ratio of horizontal departure to true vertical depth, reaching distant targets from a single surface location while managing extreme torque, drag, and hole-cleaning challenges.

What extended reach drilling is

Extended reach drilling pushes directional wells to very long horizontal departures relative to their true vertical depth — commonly a departure-to-depth ratio of two or more. ERD lets a single platform or pad drain a wide area, reach offshore reservoirs from onshore or from fewer platforms, and access targets far from the surface location. Some ERD wells extend many kilometers laterally, representing the outer limit of directional capability.

Engineering challenges

The dominant challenges are torque and drag, hole cleaning, and buckling of the drill string in the long, low-angle-to-horizontal sections. Success depends on low-friction mud, careful trajectory design to minimize dogleg severity, a rotary steerable system for smooth steering, and string design that uses heavy-weight pipe and rotation to transfer weight and move cuttings. Getting weight to the bit over such distances is a core string-design problem.
