Rotary Steerable System

Definition

Rotary Steerable System — A rotary steerable system (RSS) is a downhole steering tool that directs the bit while the entire drill string continues to rotate, enabling smoother, faster directional drilling and better hole quality than sliding with a mud motor.

What an RSS does

A rotary steerable system steers the well without stopping string rotation. Rather than sliding a bent mud motor, an RSS continuously deflects the bit while the drill pipe turns, which improves hole cleaning, reduces the drag and stuck-pipe risk that plague sliding, and produces a smoother, more consistent borehole. This makes RSS the tool of choice for long horizontal and extended-reach wells.

Push-the-bit vs. point-the-bit

Two main designs exist. Push-the-bit systems use pads that extend against the borehole wall to push the bit sideways. Point-the-bit systems tilt the internal shaft to aim the bit in the desired direction. Both are guided by MWD/LWD telemetry and a control loop that holds a target inclination and azimuth, delivering precise dogleg severity and tight trajectory control.

RSS tools are high-value, electronics-rich, and maintenance-intensive, so they are almost always delivered as a rental or service package rather than owned.
