Horizontal Well

Definition

Horizontal Well — A horizontal well is a directional well drilled from vertical through a build section to an inclination near 90 degrees so that the wellbore runs horizontally through the reservoir, maximizing contact with the producing formation.

What a horizontal well is

A horizontal well turns from vertical, through a build section of increasing inclination, into a lateral that runs roughly parallel to the reservoir at about 90 degrees inclination. By placing a long horizontal section within the pay zone, the well exposes far more reservoir than a vertical well, boosting production and drainage. Horizontal wells are central to unconventional shale and tight reservoir development, as well as thin or fractured conventional reservoirs.

Drilling considerations

The well profile is defined by its kickoff point, build rate (dogleg severity), and lateral length. Long laterals demand excellent hole cleaning, careful management of torque and drag, and often a rotary steerable system to steer smoothly and stay in zone. Heavy-weight drill pipe and proper string design are used to transfer weight to the bit in the horizontal section where gravity no longer helps.
